Catchment analysis
One of the more powerful approaches to production landscape work is via functional catchment analysis. We are engaged in the historical reconstruction of land use change in a southern Cape catchment since the 1950s, and the implications of ecosystem services and resilience, using remote sensing and hydrological modelling approaches.
Intensive agriculture
Intensive agriculture is vital for food production, income generation, and job creation in southern Africa. Southern African intensive production is severely limited by resource limitations, especially of water. We are engaged in the study of management responses in intensive high quality fruit production environments, and their implications for crop species stress and production potential.
